Hmmm...

So Bush mentions in his "State of the Union" speech that the U.S. must reduce its dependence on Middle Eastern oil...huh? How, praytell? Through the use of alternative fuels, renewable resources, mandating auto manufacturers to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles? Cmon!
No...that's certainly not it.

I've been scanning the press, and no one seems to have made the connection...where get the oil? Why, closer to home, that's where. And where might closer to home be? Well, Canada and Mexico are both major oil exporters to the States...but the real motherlode happens to be in Venezuela...

Right...subtle hints at where the next war is to be fought.

Mark my words.

Greetings Tom-

Unfortunately, Chavez' anti-american rhetoric doesn't seem to be helping matters, however valid it might be. He's already being depicted as something of a paranoid fanatic in the US press. His suppression of opposition voices in the Venezuelan press, etc. seems to be raising hackles as well, even among the more liberal segment of the US population where he is most likely to find support. More recently he's proposed to beef up the Venezuelan military in preparation for an impending US invasion.

I respect the work he is doing to help Venezuela's poor, and the stance he is taking against US imperialism in Latin America and elsewhere, but he should beware of doing/saying things that will legitimize the use of force by the US in the eyes of the public and the international community. In my humble opinion he should continue his agenda of redistributing wealth and building infrastructure in his country, and try to steer clear of provoking the US with inflammatory statements.

Either way, my sense is that the US won't be invading Venezuela any time soon. I think our military is spread to thin at present to think about something like that, and once Bush is out of office I think the likelihood will drop even further. Of course this doesn't rule out some kind of covert-op to take him out and install a US-supported "business-friendly" regime that will make us a sweet deal on some oil. This seems more likely to me than an actual conventional war.
